His monologue about seeing his own past and future simultaneously (“We’re all puppets. I’m just a puppet who can see the strings.”) is the philosophical core of the film.
It succeeds because it understands the one rule that modern superhero movies forget: It is not about the costumes. It is about the people who break inside them.
